ALICE (Aluminum-Ice) Propellant and Hydrogen Generation
Since 60`s Aluminum and ice combination has been investigated. The simplicity and inexpensiveness of Al-H20 propellant system is a good candidate for booster propellant and space explorations as well as LEO orbit storable rocket fuels. In Agust 2009, there was a successful demonstration of ALICE propelled rocket in front of many officials. Joint Purdue Un., PennState, NASA and AFOSR project resulted in success.
A nine-foot rocket has been launched to the height of 1,300ft using an green propellant ALICE. The fuel has the consistency of toothpaste with a high burn rate and achieved a maximum thrust of 650 pounds during this test.
